Exploring the Maremma
Maremma has a sea and beautiful beaches, but also history and culture, art and food and Wine traditions.
The coast
The islands of the Tuscan Archipelago overlook the Gulf of Follonica, which extends between the provinces of Grosseto and Livorno.
The whole coast is characterized by suggestive inlets that host beaches of fine sand.
Cala Violina Beach is just a few kilometers from Follonica; Punta Ala (20 km) and Castiglione della Pescaia (22 km) are towards the south, together with the tourist resort of Marina di Grosseto (35 km), the Maremma Regional Park and its Alberese Beach (68 km), the small harbour of Talamone (77 km) and the Argentario promontory (100 km). Towards the north you can reach Piombino (26 km) – a connection point with the main islands of the archipelago – and the Gulf of Baratti, which is close to Piombino and is very attractive.
The hinterland
The hinterland of Maremma is characterized by many small towns and spots rich in history and traditions. Just to name a few, Gavorrano – also mentioned by Dante in the Divine Comedy – is worth visiting since it hosts a mining museum; the Montioni Natural Park with its many hiking and bike paths; the Colline Metallifere area; Massa Marittima – just 36 km away – and Accesa Lake. A few kilometers from Follonica lies Suvereto village (24 km), one of the most fascinating villages in Tuscany with its stone houses, narrow streets and historic buildings.
In addition, we would like to mention the archaeological sites of Populonia (48 km) and Vetulonia (30 km) with its Etruscan museum, the tuff cities Pitigliano (106 km) and the lovely Sovana – which was the birthplace of Ildebrando da Soana who went down in history with the name of Pope Gregory VII during the “investiture controversy”.
In the hinterland there are also many spa resorts. The best known are the “Terme del Calidario” in Venturina (20 km), Saturnia (105 km) with its sulphurous waterfalls and Sorano (110 km) whose waters are rich in beneficial, rehabilitative and detoxifying properties.
